Close eye on hotspots

The Country Fire Authority has handed control of two coal hotspots in the Loy Yang mine over to AGL.

An AGL Loy Yang spokesman said the hotspot continued to be monitored with electronic equipment and regular site inspections.

Six CFA vehicles including a ladder platform attended the scene on Friday and treated the area with water and fire suppressant, containing the small fire in the morning.

A helicopter was also used to provide thermal images.

The CFA handed over control about 6pm.

“AGL Loy Yang recently identified the hot spot on the southern side of the mine and has been monitoring the situation,” a spokesperson said on Friday.

No damage or injuries were recorded and electricity production was not affected.
