New building for Yallourn North School

Education Minister James Merlino was in town on Thursday to officially open Yallourn North Primary School’s new state-of-the-art modular building.

It comes after the state government allocated $2.1 million in August last year to replace medium-risk asbestos-riddled buildings at Yallourn North and Moe’s South Street Primary School, which was completed earlier in the year.

The $1.5 million building at Yallourn North replaced the ageing administration area, general office, staff toilets, sick bay, art room, classrooms and library.

The buildings were made off-site and delivered to the school so teaching is not interrupted and on-site safety risks were reduced.

The Victorian School Building Authority worked with Yallourn North Primary School on building details such as colour and location.

Mr Merlino said modular buildings were a fast and efficient way to help schools replace older buildings containing asbestos.

“We are improving school infrastructure across the Latrobe Valley so every student has the opportunity to get the most out of their education,” he said.

“The permanent modular buildings give schools more flexibility and means they get brand new facilities faster.”
