Police are treating a fire which destroyed a Gillie Crescent, Morwell home overnight as suspicious.
Detectives are yet to determine how the blaze started at the property, which was used by Aboriginal Housing Victoria for client accommodation.
Neighbours told police this morning they had seen people coming and going from the property in recent weeks.
Police and neighbours said the property has been vacant for about six weeks.
Latrobe Crime Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Mick McNamara said police would investigate whether squatters were involved.
“People have been seen coming and going from the property over the past few weeks but whether they were squatting or not, we don’t know,” Detective Senior Constable McNamara said.
“There’s substantial damage to the house but the we don’t know what the value of the damage is at this stage.”
It took firefighters about 40 minutes to control the blaze after a neighbour phoned emergency services about 2am on Monday, May 14.
Aboriginal Housing Victoria manages more than 250 properties across Gippsland from Drouin to Cann River and 1500 properties across the state.
