Traralgon swimmers returned from the Australian Age Group National Championships recently with an impressive haul of medals and records.
During the first six days of the eight-day meet, 13-year-old Jordyn Cargill beat out the best of Australia to win gold in the 400-metre individual medley in a record time of 4.50.02.
Jordyn led from the start and took a commanding lead after the butterfly leg and extended it through the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle to win by more than two seconds.
He further excelled in the 200-metre medley where he won bronze in a new country record for his age in a time of 2.16.69.
Fourteen-year-old Ruby Storm competed in multi class events and enjoyed a terrific meet, sweeping the pool with six gold, three silver and one bronze medal in the 11-14 year age group.
Along the way she broke three Australian records for her class and age group in a standout performance.
Ruby is currently being targeted by the Australian Paralympic team towards Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
Head performance coach Dean Gooch was full of praise for his two charges.
“Both Jordyn and Ruby had an outstanding meet which was a direct result of their quality of training, commitment to the program and belief in the race processes we put together for them,” Gooch said.
“I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.”
The club also had six other swimmers who qualified and performed exceptionally.
Bridget Cain (16), Melina DeCort (17), Paige McLennan (16), Abby Paulet (11), Elayna Pistrin (15) and Sophie Waller (14) were outstanding representatives for the team.
The club has started its 2018/19 season with all squads now back in action including a masters (18 and over) squad training once a week on Wednesday mornings from 6am at the Ford Swim Centre.
