Toongabbie students dramatic for Education Week

For students at Toongabbie Primary School, 2018 Education Week represented an opportunity to be dramatic.

With a theme of ‘celebrating the arts’, students participated in a number of activities throughout the week which allowed them to get in touch with their creative sides, including visual arts, dance, and drama.

Principle Garry Vear said the annual, state-wide Education Week initiative allowed the school to open its doors for people to come and share their skills with students.

“We have artworks on display and the week will culminate on Friday with the wider school community invited to take part in an art and cheese event,” he said.

The ‘readers theatre’ was a highlight of the week, which involved students putting on plays in groups of four or five.

Teacher and readers theatre producer Anderson Edwards said the activity allowed students to “put their own spin” on some traditional plays.

“They made the backdrops and costumes in art, it is all of their own work,” Mr Edwards said.

“They have working hard and some of them are so well-rehearsed they are going off-script.”

Mr Edwards said the readers theatre helped students with their confidence and public speaking skills.

“We hope it leads into the future some public speaking or debating,” he said.

“It has also given them to opportunity to problem solve and work through their creative differences in putting the plays together.

“They are getting better at giving their own spin and bringing characters to life.”
