SEDA College students in Traralgon were gifted the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business last week when basketball superstar Chris Anstey came to town to hold an information and skills clinic.
The former NBA player and Melbourne Tigers coach drew on lessons learnt throughout his career in helping students get the best out of themselves.
“It’s just about spending time with the, working on maybe a few little ideas that I’ve come across over my career that have helped them become successful,” Anstey said.
“Maybe change one or two habits and what the students are able to get out of each day is essentially exploring the ability for them to find a slightly better version of themselves.”
He said the sessions were not designed to make students compare themselves to others but an “earlier version of themselves”.
“There were a few life tools that might not end up being on a white board or in a classroom anywhere that they might be able to apply to life,” Anstey said.
“I’m very lucky that I’ve been around both successful and people who have failed over the years and I’m pretty observant so I’ve learnt lots.
“I’ve had some great coaches and mentors over the years who aren’t going to be around forever and the ability to share some of the messages I’ve learnt from them and be able to apply them in day to day life is a really beneficial thing for any young person to have access to.”
Year 12 student leader Niah Linsen took part in the clinic and said it was an invaluable learning opportunity.
“I’ve actually taken so much away; I’ve heard a lot of people speak but Chris Anstey is one of the best and you take away so much from speaking to him and I felt that today,” Linsen said.
“The way you approach a goal or situation and how he was saying everyone you meet is a potential contact.”
