Work begins on highway upgrade

Upgrades to a dangerous Traralgon intersection which has been at the centre of a number of collisions along the Princes Highway have begun.

The project will comprise the installation of traffic lights, lighting upgrades and other road improvements at the Bank Street intersection, with traffic light installion slated to occur in September.

There were 10 casualty crashes at the intersection from January 2012 until June 2017, resulting in two people sustaining serious injuries and 14 people sustaining minor injuries.

The $2.9 million works to the intersection include an acceleration lane for traffic turning left onto the Princes Highway from Bank Street, a dedicated right-hand turning lane on Bank Street for traffic entering the Princes Highway, lengthening of the right-turning lane from the Princes Highway into Bank Street and will be controlled by a green and red arrow traffic signal.

VicRoads regional director eastern Scott Lawrence said the improvements would boost safety and traffic flow for the drivers who rely on the road every day.

“Traralgon is growing – so we’re making sure travel is as safe by upgrading this busy intersection,” he said.

Pedestrians will be kept safer with a gated crossing at the railway line and a footpath linking Bank Street to the Traralgon golf course.
