Morwell RSL will host a seminar to ensure returned service men and women are aware of the services they are entitled to after returning to civilian life.
Morwell RSL pensions officer Ted Dunstan said many returned service men and women in the area were unaware the Department of Veterans Affairs would cover things like access to mental health or health services, such as a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
“They don’t know their entitlements,” he said.
“As a first responder … if you get hurt, you get treated then and there, but what about later on down the track when things get worse?
“A lot of [returned service men and women] don’t want to look for help because of the lack of support they are getting, they’re sure they’re not going to get help, so to actually get them to walk in the door and say ‘help me’ is like trying to get blood from a stone sometimes”.
RSL member and returned serviceman Jeffrey Stockdale who served with the SAS said when he returned in 2003, he had been given a discharge seminar, however, he said the information presented in the session did not cover mental health or health entitlements.
“All they touched on was I could get a defence house, with a defence loan. Basic stuff like that that had nothing to do with my health or any future problems that might arise from my service,” he said.
“I don’t know how much that has changed between then and now.”
Mr Stockdale encouraged returned service men and women to participate on the night.
“Even if you’re not a veteran with problems or anything, come in,” he said.
“You never know what will happen in the future. You can still offer advice and support or whatever. Come be a part of it.”
Mr Dunstan said returned service men and women not being aware of their entitlements was a big issue in the Latrobe Valley and speakers on the night would address the services and entitlements available to them.
“You don’t have to be a member – just rock up, bring your family,” he said.
“I find the partners are the best information source because most guys just won’t open their mouth. That is the nature of the beast.”
The free seminar will be held on Wednesday, September 19 at the Morwell RSL.
Food will be provided and doors will be open from 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
Bookings are not necessary but RSVPs are appreciated by September 3.
