Roadworks and mud close roads

THE lower section of the Forests Commission Thomson Valley Road north of Erica is being widened and re-aligned by the Board of Works in preparation for the construction of the Thomson Stage 3 reservoir.

While road works are in progress the road will be closed to unauthorised traffic, divisional forester, Mr Edgar, said this week.

“The low standard narrows logging road which has been used as a bypass during reconstruction of the Thomson Valley Road has become dangerous due to wet conditions and it also has been closed to unauthorised use while it remains in a dangerous state,” he said.

Quality work experience

LOCAL year 10 students will undergo work experience with a difference this week when they join a MindShop Excellence Program at Energy Brix Australia.

The students from Catholic Regional College in Traralgon will spend the week learning about the real world of Total Quality Management by tackling an organisational issue identified by Energy Brix Australia.

“This is a joint project undertaken by the school and industry, and is a first for this area; certainly a departure from the traditional work experience program,” Peter Henderson from Bentley’s Gippsland said.

In a MindShop program, team building, the principles of continuous improvement, self confidence and basic life skills are explored by the participants.

Transition talk aims to empower community

THE Latrobe Valley will host economist and former leader of the Liberal Party Dr John Hewson as part of discussions on the region’s economic transition at the Morwell Neighbourhood House.

“We know that transition, whatever form that takes, is going to impact on the Valley,” house coordinator Tracie Lund said.

“We feel the community needs to be informed about the possibilities going forward and what might be the hiccups along the way.”

Ms Lund said Dr Hewson’s “combined interest in climate change, economics and renewable energies” made him an appealing speaker.

“I think the combination of that will bring some really insightful ideas to the Latrobe Valley,” she said.

Ms Lund believes multiple discussion on the transition issue from various groups is a positive.
