Toilets… on the nose

 

ON-the-nose toilets provoked discussion at Morwell Shire Council last week.

Yinnar and District Playgroup complained about the continuing dirty state of the shire public toilets both at the Town Hall and in Commercial Rd.

The Playgroup said that it considered them disgraceful and that many mothers avoided using them, when possible. They also said that one would never consider changing or feeding a young baby there.

Cr Grinpukel was concerned. He told council that they received many complaints about the toilets, particularly the ones on Commercial Rd.

Cr Barratt suggested that the Shire Engineer, Mr Ritchie, take a peek and refer back to council.

The Playgroup also pointed out that big commercial premises, particularly Target, New World and Woolworths did not provide public toilets.

The Playgroup said that the majority of people using these premises were mothers with young children.

Artist lets his imagination race away

 

RACING mania has taken over Monash University’s Switchback Gallery with 500 clay model racing cars circling the gallery floor.

The unusual display of clay model racing cars is an exhibition by local artist Christopher Headley.

It goes without saying that the imagination of Christopher Headley knows no limits. His latest exhibition, entitled ZETA – Climax 500, includes 500 clay model racing cars, 500 miniature racing drivers and 2000 wheels. It explores the effect of the pace of recent technologies on society today.

The exhibition was officially opened last week by Cowwarr Art Space director Carolyn Crossley.

Mr Headley is a PhD candidate and part-time lecturer in ceramics at Gippsland School of Art. He is also an artist in residence at Cowwarr Art Space.

Housing growth

 

MORWELL has been highlighted as an area where social housing could be expanded amid a State Government investment of $120 million to boost the state’s supply.

This week the government detailed its investment, to include $23 million towards increasing short-term housing and $60 million to expand the number of social housing properties on vacant or under-used land.

The government’s Rapid Housing Assistance Fund will also be extended to assist the homeless.

The pipeline program is aimed at boosting social housing through partnerships between the housing sector and private construction companies.
