1ST TRAFALGAR Scout Group recently raised more than $600 for their Cubs (ages eight to 11) to go on Cuboree Camp during the September school holidays.
Held at Gilwell Park in Gembrook every three years, Cuboree is a five-day camp that sees up to 5000 Cub Scouts from across Victoria participate in problem-solving and team-building activities.
Group leader Sian Mizzi, said the money raised would go towards supporting parents with camp fees.
“It’s just fundraising to help subsidise their fees. They’ve had to pay all up front, and part of the fundraising is to help the parents out,” she said.

A group of around 10 Cubs will be attending the camp from Trafalgar’s Cub group.
During the fundraiser, the activities were led by the scouts and with the help of leaders, who ensured the event ran smoothly.
To raise money, scout leaders Daniel Condy and Jane Cook cut off their luscious locks, and a raffle was drawn with prizes sponsored by local Trafalgar businesses.
Mr Condy, who is now bald after growing his hair for four years, said, “it’s a bit cold around the ears, but I don’t mind it.”

Ms Mizzi highlighted some issues the scout group is facing, with a declining number of scout leaders.
“We’re after some more Scout members, we’d love some committee members, fundraising committee. We need lots of support still,” she said.
“We have the Scout section and Cub section that’s active at the moment, and we’re looking to reopen the Joey section, so we need more leaders for that section.”

Ms Cook, who has only been a Scout leader for a few months, said she can already see the benefits.
“I’ve only just joined this year, and I can see how rewarding it is to mentor these kids. It brings up responsible, fun-filled adults with life skills. So I’m happy to do it. I think we need more volunteers, so get on it, come and join us.”
To get the Cubs ready for camp, a practice sleepover night was organised to get the kids used to being away from home.
