Abandoned house deliberately lit

A fire is believed to have been deliberately lit in an abandoned building adjacent to Traralgon’s Manny’s Market on Tuesday night.

Six appliances, 20 fire fighters and police were called to the former Salvation Army Office headquarters on the corner of Argyle Street and Post Office Place about 10.05pm.

Traralgon Fire Brigade senior station officer Glenn Ravenhall said the fire was confined to a bedroom, while the home was smoke logged.

“It’s very disappointing. Anyone that would deliberately light a structure on fire and in a total fire ban is deliberately contravening the law and is subject to heavy penalties,” Mr Ravenhall said.

Mr Ravenhall said the fire was not affected by the hot weather.

“In the middle of Traralgon it doesn’t make a big difference, whether its winter or summer, but anyone that lights a fire deliberately is displaying a criminal offence and anyone lighting a fire on a day of fire ban is a criminal offence,” he said.
