GippsTAFE to face discrimination allegations

TWO profoundly deaf Auslan tutors claim they were discriminated against by GippsTAFE because of their disability.

Jessica Payne and Peter Adams last year lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, alleging they were routinely denied Auslan interpreters for professional development sessions, workshops, meetings and induction sessions throughout 2011.

In their complaint form, the pair stated the alleged incidents had “affected our professionals development, as we did not have the same access to training as hearing staff”.

They have now taken the matter to the Federal Court and a directions hearing has been scheduled for 15 March.
