LATROBE City Council will seek legal advice as to whether Monash University has breached a section of legislation which requires it to provide services in a fair and equal way.
A motion was carried on Monday night, which responded to the university’s proposal to merge its Gippsland campus with the University of Ballarat.
As part of the motion, council will investigate the Monash University Act 2009, part two, section five, which lists the objects of the institution including “to provide programs and services in a way that reflects principles of equity and social justice”.
“It’s about making sure all the original expectations and the basis upon which Monash was created, that they’ve stepped up to the plate in every respect,” councillor Darrell White said.
Cr Christine Sindt said if the merger was to go ahead, people in regional areas would not be given the same access to a “quality higher education experience”.
