Fire committal hearing set

A committal hearing exploring the origin of the Aberfeldy bushfire has been set, with a range of arson reconstruction witnesses due to appear in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on 2 December.

At a committal mention on Thursday, it was estimated the December hearing would take three to five days, and would feature 16 witnesses, to determine the ignition point and cause of the fire.

The man accused of lighting the fire, 75 year-old Grahame Earnest Code, sat in the public viewing area as his bail was re-extended until the December hearing.

Code is facing five charges, including recklessly cause bushfire and causing a fire to be lit without written authority in a fire protected area during a prohibited period.
