Charges laid over ‘Peppa’ death

A MAN has been charged over the fatal shooting of a family’s pet husky near Yallourn North on Anzac Day.

He will face the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on 17 July after being charged with shooting on private property without consent and using a firearm to destroy.

Victoria Police has not released the man’s name, age or home town.Seven month-old Siberian husky ‘Peppa’ was shot dead on 25 April about 8am, allegedly on the outer region of a pine forest along Hunter Road, managed by Hancock Victoria Plantations.

Rebecca Grant, her partner Jason and two-and-a-half year-old son Jacob had pulled over on the side of the road after a family outing to let Peppa out for a rest stop.

The charges came after police re-opened the case following a report by The Express and a viral facebook post by Ms Grant.

Police initially indicated they would not pursue the case after an interview with a man who admitted to shooting the husky and said he mistook her for a wild dog.
