Latrobe Valley gardens will be on show to inspire those hoping to grow fruits and vegetables this spring to get involved in their local community garden.
Schools and community groups participating in Open Gardens October will invite the community in this month and into November, with the aim of getting more people involved in horticulture, both at home and in the community.
Latrobe City mayor Sandy Kam said the Healthy Together Latrobe initiative was a great opportunity to see and learn more about the gardens the schools and community groups had created together.
“The open gardens scheme is a great way to get people out and about, thinking about local food sources and enjoying healthy, nutritious food,” Cr Kam said.
“You may even pick up a few new tips and tricks to help grow your own vegetables.”
Traralgon South Primary School principal Joel Fraser said he hoped by participating in the Open Garden October, more community members would put their hands up to help tend the school’s vegetable garden.
“We haven’t had a lot of interest from the community, so we see this as a way of promoting what we’ve got,” Mr Fraser said.
“We have talked about community members having a part of the garden they could use for planting, as well as helping out tending to the garden.
“The flow on effects include the students taking pride in the garden, having things neat and tidy knowing that other people are coming to visit.”
Mr Fraser said he also suspected there were community members who could share their gardening expertise with the children.
