High voltage surge

John McDonald is just one of hundreds of Mirboo North residents left with a swag of defective household appliances, due to a power surge which ripped through the town last week.

The high voltage surge occurred when a 66,000 kiloVolt power line crossed with a 22,000kV line in galeforce winds last Wednesday afternoon, blowing up household appliances, solar inverters, smart meters and hot water systems.

A spokesperson for electricity supplier SP AusNet said 100 electricity meters had already been replaced since the event, adding the company was committed to offering compensation to affected customers.

Mr McDonald said he lost about $4000 worth of appliances in the surge.
