Hazelwood Power Station will trial Queensland black coal as an auxiliary startup fuel in one of its generation units next week.
A GDF SUEZ spokesperson said the use of black coal in the startup process may result in a more visible dark plume from the chimney stack. The trial comes as part of GDF’s ongoing investigations into alternative startup fuels, amid the upcoming “temporary” closure of HRL’s Energy Brix power station, Hazelwood’s current supplier of startup briquettes.
The spokesperson said the Environment Protection Authority had been notified of the trial, which he said was permitted under the station’s operation licence.
