THE Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry will begin its final series of public hearings into mine rehabilitation in the Latrobe Valley tomorrow.
The Board of Inquiry, led by Bernard Teague, will examine short, medium and long-term options to rehabilitate the Latrobe Valley’s three open cut coal mines this week.
A list of witnesses has been released including community members, mining company representatives from EnergyAustralia, GDF SUEZ and AGL, State Government representatives, mining researchers and Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley.
The following week the board will review the current systems in place to ensure rehabilitation of mines, including whether there are any suitable and sustainable alternatives to the current bond system.
The hearings will be held at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre from Tuesday to Friday, then the 14, 15 and 18 December.
The board’s report on mine rehabilitation is scheduled to be delivered to the Governor of Victoria on 15 March, 2016.
