Glengarry will play host to a free family friendly 4km Fun Run/Walk and Fete this Sunday to celebrate the opening of upgrade works at the Eaglehawk Creek Bridge and trail sealing.
Runners and walkers will set off from Platform 3854 Cafe, located at the former Glengarry Railway Station at 11am and travel along the picturesque Gippsland Plains Rail Trail to the Eaglehawk Creek Bridge and back.
In addition to the Fun Run, there will be a Fete, also starting at 11am.
The Fete will showcase the best produce and crafts, great tunes provided by local musicians, face-painting, games, as well as sporting activities hosted by the Latrobe Streetgames crew.
Gippsland Plains Rail Trail committee chairperson Helen Hoppner said holding the event in Glengarry was a no-brainer because of its value to the Rail Trail.
“Having an event in Glengarry is central to the whole works and includes all the Glengarry residents, hence the Fete and the Fun Run,” she said.
“It’s all a bit Glengarry-centric for a really good reason, as this is the jewel in the crown of our Rail Trail.”
The event, which was originally scheduled for mid-last year, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will also celebrate the easing of restrictions and provide an opportunity for local businesses to promote the town.
Glengarry Community Association president Dean Sutton is looking forward to Sunday and said it was an important occasion to celebrate after the town went through a tough 2020.
“The event is really exciting for the town. It’s our first face-to-face event since COVID came about so it’s a bit of a rebirth for the Rail Trail, but also something exciting for the community and a reason to get together and celebrate,” he said.
