“WOW, bang.”

That is how popular Channel 7 footy commentator Brian Taylor said he would have called the moment he was involved in a minor gas explosion at Walhalla on Wednesday.

Taylor was trying to light a hot water service at his new property in the popular holiday destination when it exploded.

Following early assistance from the Erica and District Fire Brigade, Taylor, 59, was airlifted from Rawson to the Alfred Hospital with burns to his face and neck.

Taylor, now recovering after the incident, shared the events of what transpired with 7News Melbourne last night.

“(After the explosion) the shock sets in,” he said.

“Just that first three or four seconds, I put my hair out, got out there, moved on and got a wet towel over my face.

“The locals helped me, which was absolutely fantastic, and saved any swelling or blistering on my face.

“They made sure there was nothing wrong with my airways.

“I’ve got quite a big forehead now … it burnt back into my hair and the old moustaka (moustache) got a bit of a touch-up.”

Taylor will be on deck for his broadcasting duties when Port Adelaide and Geelong meet in the opening week of the AFL finals tonight.
