Today is the second day of the seven-day snap lockdown introduced by the acting chief health officer at 11.59pm on Tuesday.

It comes as the state recorded 1438 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours until midnight, 46 of which are in regional Victoria.

Of the regional Victoria cases – 12 are in Mitchell Shire, six in Moorabool, five in Shepparton and four in Warrnambool.

Victoria has 11,018 active cases.

There were also five COVID-related deaths in the past 24 hours.

A total of 34,323 vaccines were administered yesterday and just under 65,000 tests were completed.

Mr Weimar said the sharp rise in numbers was as a result of “significant gatherings” on Friday and Saturday.

“Contract tracers tell us there has been significant numbers of social gatherings such as grand final parties, barbecues and backyard visits,” he said.

“Today is a significant setback in how we manage this outbreak.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said many of the cases were “completely avoidable”.

“It is very clear these numbers go up faster because people don’t abide by the rules,” he said.

“This is frustrating, we can see to the other side now.

“I say to all Victorians, do nothing to add to the spread of the virus. I know it’s difficult. We are all craving and longing for that personal connection.

“Let all of us make the best decisions, not infect people we love.”

Mr Andrews said the state had ticked over 80 per cent first dose vaccinations.

“We are at 80.3 per cent first dose and 49.5 per cent second dose,” he said.

“There is a world of difference between 49.5 per cent and 70 per cent double dose.”

Mr Andrews also said that due to confirmed supply that the interval for Pfizer will be reduced from six weeks to three weeks from October 4.

“Over the next few weeks hopefully we will be able to bring forward the 70 per cent double dose target from October 26,” he said.

“There is a degree of confidence we will hit that target and that’s when lockdown ends.

“The sooner we can reach the target, lockdown ends and we will move into a different phase.”
