Railways won’t move goods yard

THE Railways have declined to relocate the Morwell goods yards, claiming that it would cost in excess of $1,600,000. But Morwell Shire Council will continue to press the matter and will ask the Member for Morwell, Mr Amos, to head a deputation to the Premier, Mr Hamer. Council is particularly concerned because of the proposed Loy Yang development and the tonnages that will be carried over the shire’s roads. The Railways told council last week the existing arrangement was the most efficient and economical.

Monash a part of Gippsland

THE head of Monash University’s Gippsland campus claims the Churchill campus is no more of a creature of Clayton in Melbourne. Monash Deputy Vice Chancellor Lauchlin Chipman yesterday told a meeting of senior Gippsland campus managers he was saddened by some of the “misconceptions” of the university held in some parts of Gippsland. “The majority of students attached to the Gippsland campus do not come from the Latrobe Valley and less than half of the research is focused on the Latrobe Valley,” he said. Professor Chipman said he was concerned that there were still “vestiges of irrational hostility” to anything associated with the Latrobe Valley and in some other parts of Gippsland. “So as far as Gippsland is concerned, this means the tour views and our agendas will not necessarily coincide with those of local government authorities or local federal and state parliamentary members,” he told the meeting.
