Floods – ‘APM to blame’

FARMERS along the Latrobe River flats, north of Traralgon, are to protest the River Trust over flooding of their properties by the APM. Cr Harry Saunders of the Traralgon Shire said yesterday that levee banks had been built near Wade’s Creek where it empties into the Latrobe. “I think APM built purification dams, but left the banks a bit high. Water is diverted east instead of into the river,” he said. Mr Dugald Campbell’s Property was underwater. “You could have boat races,” Cr Saunders said. Also flooded are the properties of Cr Alf Ashworth and Mr Don Little. Cr Saunders said his had been flooded but isn’t so bad now. Farmers north of the river were similarly affected. Flats were flooded before the river went over its banks during recent heavy rains. “The secretary of the River Trust is away promoting Gippsland on the Sun Tour. When he gets back, we’ll be staging a protest,” Cr Saunders said.

Plan for M’well subway closure

MORWELL traders and the Shire of La Trobe are working to persuade the State Government to fill in and close the controversial Morwell subway, replacing it with an above-ground pedestrian crossing. Morwell Chamber of Commerce, La Trobe Shire and Mainstreet representatives met last week to discuss a range of Morwell-related issues, namely the proposal to install the pedestrian crossing and close the subway. A spokesman claimed the shire’s efforts to date in pushing ahead with the pedestrian crossing proposal had been “stifled by the bureaucracy of V/Line”. A letter addressed to Transport Minister Alan Brown from Chamber President Peter Keenan says the chamber “actively supports” the closure of the existing subway. “Shoppers in Morwell’s CBD loathe to use the subway because of concerns for their safety,” Mr Keenan wrote. “There have been several incidents involving people being abused and assaulted, and Victoria Police are not in a position to constantly patrol the subway.” The letter said that in October last year, the then City of Morwell developed plans for an integrated railway pedestrian crossing and public transit centre, but local government amalgamation had since delayed the project. “

Hackers send bomb threat to school

A BOMB threat sent from a hacked student email at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School prompted student evacuation warning at Traralgon and Warragul campuses yesterday. The school was alerted that a student’s account was compromised and email messages, some referencing a bomb threat, were sent to members of the school community. In a statement, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School principal Lisa Moloney said the number of safety actions was put in place at the advice of police. She said this included holding students at evacuation points upon arrival at school until the grounds were declared safe by police. “Our internal investigations indicate the hackers had no connection to the school,” she said. “We are certain that all family information and data have remained secure.” All classes and activities were operating as usual by 9am at Warragul, and in Traralgon a short time after.
