Boxing Day brings with it’s crowd-filled shops and extensive sales the annual repair and maintenance of the West Gate Bridge.
For the first time however, the works will take place across lanes travelling in both directions, and start on 9pm December 26.

Three outbound lanes will close until 6pm on Monday, December 29, while three citybound lanes will be closed until 6am on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected, with drivers advised to plan ahead or avoid travel over the bridge where possible. Surrounding roads are also expected to experience heavier-than-usual traffic.

Public transport is being promoted as the best option for accessing major events, concerts, New Year’s Eve celebrations and city shopping, with train services to Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations connecting with CBD tram routes.

Motorists also have an alternative route following the opening of the West Gate Tunnel, though tolls apply. Drivers travelling from the M80 Ring Road or Princes Freeway are advised to choose lanes early, with the far-left lanes of the West Gate Freeway providing access to freeway ramps and the tunnel, and the express lanes leading to the bridge.

The works have been scheduled during a period of typically lower traffic volumes and favourable weather conditions, with the 9pm start time aimed at minimising disruption to holidaymakers.

Heavy vehicle curfews will apply on some inner-west roads during the works, with further information available via the Victorian transport website.

Transport Victoria has thanked motorists for their patience, encouraging drivers to check real-time traffic conditions and public transport updates before travelling.
