1110 cattle shot
THE big cattle wipeout at Rosedale and Morwell on Friday has left the Latrobe Valley with 1110 fewer cattle. The Rosedale pit will be used again tomorrow when 400 head from the Maffra shire and 50 extras from the Rosedale shire will be shot. Morwell won’t carry out any more shoots until, as the assistant shire secretary said yesterday, “the demand is upwards of 250 head”. Two shire employees manned the guns all day, and earthmoving equipment shovelled the carcasses into a 15ft by 40ft pit situated off the Longford Rd. east of the township. Mass shootings are being carried out throughout the state as farmers reduce stock numbers because of an acute shortage of feed due to drought conditions. The stock that are being shot are mainly old and sick and have little or no market value.

Parents should not be punished for action of their children
THE manager of the Family Research Action Centre in Morwell has hit out at the Australian states considering laws to punish parents for the actions of their adolescent children. Dr Harvey Miller points to a recent American court case where the parents of a child were found guilty under a similar new state law, when their son was charged with stealing, vandalism, and handling drugs. “Providing support for parents seems a better way to approach the problem of rebellious kids”, he says. “Convicting parents for the crimes of their children won’t solve anything”.

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe yesterday presented Berry Street, Anglicare Victoria and the participants of the parents program with nappies collected through the Collective Giving Project. “The generosity of locals has allowed 1130 nappies to be donated to drop-off points at the Churchill Pharmacy and my electorate office in Morwell,” Mr Northe said. Mr Northe said the organisations will each receive 376 nappies as part of the collection.
