Band battles to survive

THE current survivors of the Morwell Citizens’ Band and their friends turned out in strength at last week’s meeting to gather support for the band, which is desperately struggling to retain functional membership.

This situation is due to several factors including the retirement of older bandsmen.

Any male or female from 9 to 90 who can play – or who would like to play – an instrument may join the band. No one has to be a top musician to play in the band and instruments and teachers are available to learn.

Secretary Karen Davis, 20, says that playing in the band provides a considerable amount of fun and friendship.

“The idea that the music played by the band is ‘old-hat’ is in itself an old hat argument. We would like many more younger people to join so that we can acquire bigger and better musical scope and appeal to people of all ages.”

Karen and her fellow members feel it would be a great pity to see the Morwell Band fade out of existence because people cannot understand what enjoyment can be derived from being associated with it.

Program aims to reduce violence

A THREE-YEAR program aimed at reducing violence in Gippsland will be officially launched tomorrow.

The Gippsland Anti-Violence Program, to be funded by the State Department of Justice, will identify the causes of violence in Gippsland.

It will also aim to implement sustainable, practical and cost effective methods of reducing the number of assaults and other violence in the region.

The project will be overseen by a management team of nine people representing local government, the community, the Department of Education, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Justice, TAFE and the Gippsland Police District.

The project management team has identified five key result areas which it will address: alcohol and public places; young people and education; family violence; drugs and driving; and research and evaluation.

The project team plans to call on the skills and expertise of groups and agencies already involved in those areas to participate in formulating and implementing strategies to reduce violence in Gippsland.
