Traralgon stumps Yallourn

LAWN BOWLS

WEST GIPPSLAND

DIVISION one ladder leader Yallourn was stunned by a determined Traralgon outfit in round five of West Gippsland Bowls Saturday pennant in blustery conditions at Yallourn.

The weather was not favourable for bowling with a glacial wind blowing from the west causing havoc and pushing bowls off line.

Traralgon got off to a great start when Chris Ward’s rink claimed six shots on the first end.

When the bell rang for afternoon tea Traralgon held a slender overall lead of seven shots.

With one rink down by nine shots it was anyone’s game.

The final session of play saw Traralgon win three of the four rinks and register a winning margin of 15 shots and 18 points.

The comfortable victory moved Traralgon to second position on the ladder and announced the team as a force to be reckoned with in coming matches.

One of the most coveted female bowlers to ever play the game in Gippsland, Una Holt has died and her funeral will be held today.

Holt, who won 28 Club Championships and seven Champion of Champions crowns in the local district, was inducted into the Latrobe City Sporting Hall of fame in 2006.

Her daughter is current Yallourn bowler Lorraine Steele who is also a champion player.
