WEST GIPPSLAND PENNANT
THE recently renovated Yallourn Bowls Club was the venue for the round seven West Gippsland Bowls feature match between Yallourn and Morwell Club.
Michael Yacoub’s Morwell Club team got away to an early lead on the rink, with a five on the second end and two on the third end, to lead 7-1. Yallourn skip Kevin Lovett then produced a six to draw scores level at seven all.
Lovett’s men led 11-7 at one stage before losing five ends in a row to trail by four shots, then pegged the score back to 16-17.
Yacoub and team mates Scott Gillespie, Dennis Ashman, Ryan Marston rallied and went on to win the contest 25-20.
On the next rink Ron Witton was skip in place of the absent Ian Hilsley and was on fire for Morwell Club.
Opposite number George Lambos chased him all day before drawing ahead 21-20 on the 20th end, but a determined Witton fought back to record a result of 28-22.
The Yallourn team of Tony Knipping, Peter Phillips, Ken Capper and Alan Grubb (skip) drew the same rink as the Morwell Club team of Geoff Unwin, Richard Hopley, Phil Wynd and Matt Ferrari (skip).
Grubb’s team struggled all day and lost 12-26.
Norm Trembath, Mil Karleusa, Peter Randall and Ian Kirkup (skip) pulled off a win for Morwell Club on the fourth rink.
Yallourn skip Josh McCormick ripped his notorious drives with pinpoint accuracy to win six ends in succession late in the game, and drew scores level at 24-24 before Kirkup won the last two ends to ensure the result went Morwell’s way, 28-24.
Morwell club collected the maximum 20 points and an overall score of 107-78 shots.
