WEST GIPPSLAND
NEIGHBOURING rivals Traralgon and Morwell Club occupied first and second position on the ladder leading into Saturday’s eighth round clash in West Gippsland Bowls Division Saturday pennant and competed hard to attain top spot.
Morwell Club was determined to seek redemption on home turf for a previous loss to Traralgon, assisted by perfect weather and an excellent green.
Traralgon struggled early in the game as Morwell Club successfully converted scoring shots held by Traralgon to build a handy 27 shot buffer by the half-time break.
Following afternoon tea Traralgon displayed enthusiasm and skill, lifting their game to close the gap while Morwell Club lost momentum. Traralgon’s surge was spoiled when Morwell Club addressed its ailing effort to maintain the lead.
Traralgon fought back late in the game but ultimately succumbed by 12 shots.

State triples
Margaret Gibbins and her Traralgon RSL team defeated clubmate Diane Hilsley’s side 14-12 in the final of the WGBD State Triples on Friday at Trafalgar.
In the men’s triples final, which was also played at Trafalgar, Ian Caines’ Moe team defeated Wil McIlwain’s Traralgon trio 15-12.
The WGBD finalists will now compete against the finalists from South Gippsland on 9 February to determine who represents the Strzelecki region at the state championships.
Men’s state fours and women’s state pairs commence at Traralgon on Friday.
