MORWELL Club duo Ian Hilsley and Matt Ferrari won the West Gippsland Bowls Division Men’s State Pairs title on their home greens last month to finish the year in style.
The twosome defeated Greg McRonald and Glenn Scott 22-18 on a quick-running green in windy conditions.
McRonald and Scott were not able to reproduce their miraculous semi-final performance, in which they won five shots on the final end to force a tie, then went on to win in sudden death against Ave Roeder and Austin Gapper.
The Morwell pair will now play off against South Gippsland in the Strzelecki final next month at Traralgon Bowls Club.
The state singles started in sunny conditions at Trafalgar on Sunday, but by late afternoon it was blowing a gale and wreaking havoc with bowlers’ lines.
Ian Caines and Clive Padgham showed their experience to weather the storm and won through to the region final at Trafalgar, to be held today.
The ladies’ Champion of Champions Singles will also be played today at Trafalgar.
