A whole new level of play

TRARALGON Bowls Club “raised the bar to a new level” in its hosting of the Trans-Tasman series last week, according to Bowls Australia officials.

The compliment made the club’s laborious preparation, including the meticulous recreation of Scottish greens to help prepare bowlers for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, worth the effort, chairman Austin Gapper said.

“It’s been a huge week and a huge amount of work, but just on the comments from the players and the officials and the spectators, we’ve been over the moon with the response,” Gapper said.

“To get that feedback from them just makes everything worthwhile.”

About 1200 spectators attended over five days of the international tournament, coming close to the 1343 who watched the recent Australian Open in Darebin, Melbourne.

“That just speaks volumes that we were able to get similar numbers to a big event… it was a great success.”

The tournament finished last Thursday afternoon, when Australia retained the Trans-Tasman trophy.
