The Traralgon Table Tennis Association held its annual club championships night last week where more than 40 players competed in various events including the open championships.

The night started with the three doubles events and in section three the highly fancied team of Declan Boyd and Heath Spasato defeated Jenny Tulau and Kamy Wu in straights sets.

Section two doubles saw Tony Hiriart and Anton Fullerton fight hard to defeat the pairing of Jamie Sjamsudin and Andrew Simpson, 12-10 and 11-5.

Mick Warr and Henk Vande Stoop won their place in open doubles final with a win over Jeff Pollard and Tony Hiriart in straight sets while Steve Warr and Henry Frannsen took out Mark Strini and Steve Boyd in the other semi-final, 12-10, 12-10.

The open doubles final went to four sets with Mick and Henk winning the fourth, 12-10.

In a best of five final in section three, Declan Boyd defeated Quynh Cotterill in straight sets.

Peter Quinn defeated Tony Hiriart in a best of five final in section two in a great game that went the distance, 11-9 in the fifth.

In the section one restricted singles, Ian Strong overcame Steve Boyd in a

thrilling five-setter, 11-6 in the fifth.

Sheila Whitehead took out the women’s open championship final over Quynh Cotterill in four sets and reclaimed the title of women’s champion.

In the men’s open final Mick And Steve Warr faced off in the final for the 10th year running.

Mick was made to work hard but managed to do enough to win in four sets.

His win takes his club championship titles to 13 from the last 14 years.

This result continues Mick’s great form for the year after he finished runners-up in this year’s Victorian Country Championships in June and earned selection in the Victorian State Team for over 30’s for the national championships in October.

The Traralgon Table Tennis Association has its junior club championships scheduled for Thursday, August 30 from 5.30pm.
