MORWELL-product Changkuoth Jiath has recommitted to Hawthorn for a further two years.
The dashing defender had a breakout season in 2021, averaging 20.3 disposals and earning a place in the AFL Players’ Association 22 Under 22 team.
The 22-year-old was able to get some continuity into his game, playing 16 matches before injury cut short his campaign.
Jiath has played 23 games for Hawthorn since debuting in 2019.
As well as a new contract, Jiath will also have a new jumper number this season.
Jiath has been given the honour of succeeding 400 gamer Shaun Burgoyne in wearing the number nine, a number also carried at Hawthorn by Brownlow Medallists Shane Crawford and Robert DiPierdomenico.
The Hawks will enter season 2022 with club legend Sam Mitchell in charge after esteemed coach Alastair Clarkson’s departure.
Hawthorn finished 14th last season with seven-wins, 13 losses and two draws.
Jiath will be back home on Friday, February 25 as the Hawks play Collingwood in a practise game.
The match commences at 4pm at Morwell Recreation Reserve.
Latrobe City Council mayor Kellie O’Callaghan welcomed the announcement.
“We can’t wait to welcome AFL back to the Morwell Recreation Reserve this month, especially after the challenges we’ve faced over the past two years,” she said.
“It will be a fantastic free event for our community to be part of, while also showcasing the high standard of sporting facilities we have on offer in Latrobe City.”
