TRARALGON HARRIERS

TO Morwell’s north, just off Maryvale Road amongst pine plantation, the Chook Hill 5.8km, an old favourite of the Traralgon Harriers, attracted strong participation of 55 runners and walkers.
The course consisted of a single lap over gravelly and sandy logging tracks with some steep climbs incorporated.
Weather conditions were mild, but humid.
The standout result of the field was that of junior, Dylan Mbulawa, a Harriers’ newcomer and someone of considerable running ability.
His finishing time of 26min. 8sec. saw him finish eighth outright over a moderately difficult course.
Yani Cornthwaite is consistently dominating the female category, finishing more than two minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Liz Kenney, with Alysha Duncan a further four minutes behind.
Yani is venturing into ultra-distance running, having entered the Duncan’s Run 50km trail run to be staged from the Tarra-Bulga National Park on March 19.
Her speed should be useful here when combined with the ability to endure.
Greg Semmler, wearing his new, hi-tech $250 running shoes, strode out to gradually gain an insurmountable lead, despite not feeling in his best form to record the quickest time outright.
Ian Cornthwaite was battling unsuccessfully to catch him and finished 42 seconds behind, while another experienced veteran, Glenn Graham, beginning to regain some of his usual strong form, finished next.
Tomorrow night’s event is over a new 5km course beginning from the western end of Kay Street, Traralgon and then following the bike path towards Morwell.
