THE Traralgon Harriers Community Fun Run and Walk is on Sunday, March 27.
This year’s run will take participants on a scenic route around Morwell, starting and finishing at Kernot Hall.
Participants can run or walk the five kilometre course at their leisure, either as a team, individual or family, while those 12 years-and-under can run the 1.5km.
Harriers’ president Phill Mayer encouraged those interested to get along.
“It is the 24th running of the Community Fun Run, it is something that the Traralgon Harriers do for the community, it is part of our charter to increase awareness and opportunity for community to be involved in health and fitness,” he said.
“We partner with a lot of really wonderful organisations, DFP Recruitment are our
major sponsor, they make the event a possibility for us.
“It is all about raising money for Rotary Centenary House.”
Mayer said the event was open to everyone, with an emphasis on participation rather than winning.
“It caters to all abilities, from super-speedy runners that will try to crack some good times, right through to our recreational and social runners and walkers who will just come along and push a pram,” he said.
“Schools get involved, businesses get involved, sports clubs, there is an award for the greatest entry, number of entrants in those organisations.
“All children get a medal. We have thousands of dollars in spot prizes so even if you are not a champion runner and you don’t think you are going to get a podium finish there is a good chance that you might pick up a spot prize on the day.
“Participation with the community is key, it really is about getting people off the coach and introducing them to the club that we are a welcoming club, most of our members are social and recreational members – not Athletics Victoria standard representatives.
“It doesn’t matter what your ability is, the record is just under 17 minutes for the 5km, some people go out to chase that but most people just want to come along and have a run, I’m personally going to run with my daughter and we’ll just chat, encourage and cheer people on.”
The Fun Run starts at 9am on Sunday, March 27.
Other activities on the day will include a massage tent, shoe displays and an ice
cream van.
