TRARALGON HARRIERS

THIRTY-five enthusiastic participants took advantage of the chance to test themselves on the synthetic athletics track at Newborough last week.
This event also served as a handicap setter for the winter season and marked the end of the current summer program.
To create relatively even competition participants were graded into five starting groups with about 15 minutes interval.
This also helped prevent crowding on the track.
Conditions were windy and cool, adding a further challenge to the 12.5 lap venture.
Of the Group 1 starters, Ian Heafield posted the fastest time, also trumping the Group 2 results – but not without a challenge from his wife, Belinda, just 10 seconds slower.
Anne Bomers clinched first place in Group 2 by a narrow margin, while Catherine Leonard eventually caught and passed Phill Mayer in an exciting Group 3 event to finish more than 30 seconds ahead.
Group 4 had the largest starting field and saw Jason Odlum dominate with a finishing time faster than a couple of the Group 5 participants.
Finally, athletic junior Miles Verschuur outran Ian Cornthwaite in the second half of the Group 5 event in a well-judged race to finish under 18 minutes in relatively difficult conditions.
Thursday’s event is the Breed Street, Traralgon 5km starting from near the netball courts at the northern end of the street.
Registration is from 5.30pm.
