A-LEAGUE

BACK where he belongs, the Central Coast Mariners have hired club legend and Morwell’s John Hutchinson as its next head coach.

Hutchinson, who has spent the bulk of his managerial career overseas, returns to his playing roots ahead of the A-League’s 2026/27 season on a two-year deal.

“It’s an incredibly special feeling to be back with the Mariners,” Hutchinson said.

“This club has been such a huge part of my life, I’ve got so many incredible memories here as a player, and to now have the opportunity to make more as head coach is something I’m extremely proud of.

“As a coach, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from some outstanding people and experience football in different countries and environments – I am looking forward to bringing all that experience to the Central Coast.”

The former Gippsland Falcons player arrived at the Mariners in 2005, following stops in Sydney with the Northern Spirit and Manly United, staying in the state but stepping up a level.

Hutchinson donned the yellow and navy in the Mariners’ debut season in the A-League, as one of eight expansion clubs for the new national competition, making 271 appearances across a 10-year stand.

That number of games made him the most capped Mariner of all time, which still stands, serving as captain for three years and helping the Central Coast to its first A-League championship in 2013.

Hutchinson served as assistant manager at the Mariners the year after his retirement, before taking up a supporting role at Seattle Sounders FC 2 (MLS reserves side) and eventually being elevated to head coach in early 2018.

After a period at now inactive A-League club, Western United, and then returning to Seattle this time in the MLS as a development coach, Hutchinson led the United State’s second-tier club El Paso Locomotive for the 2021/22 season.

In the most recent years, Hutchinson has coached in Japan, firstly in an interim basis at Yokohama F. Marinos after former EPL and Australian player Harry Kewell was let go as head coach, before then leading Jubilo Iwata.

Prior to Kewell’s tenure, former Socceroos head coach Ange Postecoglou was in charge at Yokohama F. Marinos.

The Mariners, back-to-back A-League champions in 2023 and 2024, have slumped to middle-of-the-road finishes in the last two seasons, but Hutchinson sees the club’s vision.

“It’s an exciting time to be coming back to the Mariners,” he said.

“I believe in the vision TSG (club owners Total Soccer Growth Holdings) has for the club and I’m looking forward to working closely with the group and growing on their experience – it’s a project I’m incredibly excited to be part of.

“I know exactly what this club stands for. We want to play positive football, develop young players, compete every single week and build a team that our members and supporters are proud to get behind.

“The supporters have always been the heartbeat of this football club. I experienced that as a player and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with them as we begin this exciting new chapter together.”

Hutchinson’s time in the game began at local Latrobe Valley club Morwell Pegasus, before joining Gippsland Falcons (Eastern Pride) for five seasons between 1996 and 2001.

He additionally played for the Maltese national team from 2009 to 2011 for 11 appearances.

Hutchinson’s win-loss-draw record as a manager is 52-59-23, however, he sports a winning record in his last two ventures in Japan.
