Morwell Club rains supreme

LAWN BOWLS

THE West Gippsland Bowls division one clash between Morwell Club and Moe was played in high spirits despite morning downpour and adverse conditions throughout the match at Morwell on Saturday.

Moe was weakened by the loss of skip Stewie Caines and up and comer Craig Thornton, while Morwell Club was also shy two players.

Morwell was out of the blocks in a hurry and sped to a 22 shot lead with all four rinks up.

After tea the gap was decreased to three with Moe rallying, but the Morwell Club galvanised and held on to an 18 shot win, claiming the spoils on three out of four rinks.

A standout performance by Ryan Marston over the experienced Sandy Caines, who held his side together early, saw Morwell Club take a 26-13 win on rink one.

Ron Witton managed a hard fought win over Bob Cole’s side, finishing 24-19.

Moe’s Rex Price and Morwell Club’s Wayne Lynch had a see-sawing match.

Price scored a seven to go to the lead and held on 23-22 to take Moe’s only rink for the day.

The other battle between new Morwell Club member, Rod Smith and Moe’s Ian Caines was a beauty.

Smith scored four shots to one on the last two ends to salvage an unlikely 23-22 victory.

The result saw Morwell Club nudge in front of Moe by four points and return to the form that saw it reach finals last year.

Other division one matches saw Traralgon defeat Traralgon RSL 128-84, Yallourn edge out Trafalgar 96-84 and Drouin tied with Warragul 88-88.

Duck weather for Ladies

IN midweek ladies pennant Trafalgar and Traralgon strapped on their snorkels to endure high winds and relentless rain, only to share the points at the end of play.

After six ends Traralgon’s Kaye Garry had a lead of 7-2 over Heather Taylor, while Trafalgar’s Lyn Mathews was well on top of Dettie Wylie 10-4.

Mary Holdsworth also had her nose in front 4-3 over Wendy Scott’s quartet to help Trafalgar to an overall lead of two shots.

On completion of the 10th end Trafalgar held a four shot advantage and appeared to be handling the deteriorating weather better than the visitor.

The 15th end came and went with Trafalgar holding a seven shot lead.

Mathews produced a pearler of a shot to establish a lead of 11 over Wylie, while Garry was up 13-11 and Scott hit the front on her rink 12-10.

Staring at defeat Traralgon turned to stalwarts Wylie and Scott to show their true colours.

The final five ends produced some fight from Traralgon, which proved enough to secure a plucky 59-59 draw.

In the wash-up Taylor defeated Garry 20-15, Mathews beat Wylie 23-20 and Holdsworth went down to Scott 16-24.
