MOURINHO’S barrier draw proved too difficult to negotiate in Saturday’s Cox Plate, as Peter Gelagotis’ eight year-old ran 12th.
The Moe-trained Bay Gelding was forced to run wide from the outset which stymied his chances in the Australasian weight for age championship.
At $41 the Special One was never in the mix, finishing well behind the winning trifecta of favourite Winx, Criterion and Highland Reel.
“I got a bit of cover. We peeled out along the side and he kicked for about 100 metres but he found them a bit good on the day,” jockey Vlad Duric said of Mourinho’s run.
The result marked the end of the group one Underwood Stakes winner’s spring racing run.
