Latrobe Valley residents are being warned not to open scam emails offering bogus gift vouchers in exchange for personal information.
Moe man Richard Chetland received an email last week announcing he was the “lucky winner” of a $500 Bunnings voucher.
The email asked him to follow a link and fill out his details to “confirm” the win.
He said it came from a non-Bunnings email address and was poorly worded, alerting him to the probability it was a scam.
“It just didn’t seem right so I rang Bunnings and they don’t know anything about it, so that just confirmed it was a scam,” he said.
Mr Chetland deleted the email.
A spokesperson for Bunnings directed The Express to its website, which has information about scams involving fake gift cards and vouchers via a “growing number” of scam emails, Facebook pages and websites.
Offers can include filling out a ‘Customer Satisfaction’ survey and giving personal details; sharing, commenting and ‘liking’ a Facebook page; or calling a specified telephone number and providing personal information.
“Bunnings is in no way associated with any of the above activities and do not use social media for any offers or promotions,” a spokesperson said.
“Bunnings will also never ask for personal or banking details in unsolicited communications.
“Bunnings is reporting all scams to the ACCC’s SCAM Watch and is encouraging customers to help eliminate these scams and protect others by also reporting your experience to the ACCC.”
