WONTHAGGI Football Netball Club is set to remain in the Gippsland League after an ‘overwhelming’ majority of Power members voted against a move to the West Gippsland FNL in 2017.
About 100 club members turned out for a special general meeting yesterday where an open forum discussion took place for about two hours prior to the vote, with about 70 per cent backing the GL, according to club president Brett Tessari.
Tessari said it was a productive discussion which ultimately resulted in a “resounding yes” in favour of the major league.
“The moral was we want to play the best football and netball in Gippsland and that’s the Gippsland League,” Tessari said.
A potential move to the West Gippsland competition, set to be reformed in 2017 as an AFL Gippsland Senior Leagues Review recommendation, was mooted due to concerns over the Power’s ability to compete at junior levels in the GL.
However the preference at senior level was always to play at the highest tier available.
“We just have to work harder on our juniors,” Tessari said.
A vote to switch leagues would have required a 75 per cent majority vote and ratification from governing bodies.
