Fresh funds for Quantum

YOU do not often hear of a university party being thrown to raise money for a community organisation.

But this will be the case at Federation University’s Gippsland campus in September when students try to raise money for Quantum Support Services.

Ryan Keyhoe and Ellen Dwyer, participants in the university’s student leadership program, were thinking of ways to give back to the community.

They have decided to throw a fundraising party with a ‘So Fresh’ theme and hope to raise as much money as possible to help disadvantaged locals.

“We’re the next generation of this country and we’re trying to build ourselves up so it’s not all about us,” Mr Keyhoe said.

“We’re trying to involve everyone and give back to those who are less fortunate or in worse positions than what we are and help raise awareness for those people as well.”

All proceeds from pre-sold tickets will go directly to Quantum, along with the money raised through donations that are auctioned off on the night.

Quantum is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides a range of support services to Gippsland’s most vulnerable.

Quantum general manager of corporate support Steve Koczwara said the focus from any money raised would be community development activities that supported those at risk of homelessness.

Although Quantum is yet to decide what to spend the funds on, community events such as barbecues or excursions to engage isolated or marginalised residents in several local caravan parks are on the cards.

Mr Koczwara said the students’ work represented a willingness of people to do something about a major area of social disadvantage in the Latrobe Valley.

“Their interest in making the donation to Quantum is sincerely felt as a reflection of a positive community spirit that values both the work of Quantum but, more importantly, the acceptance of the need to do something for those who are homeless and often facing difficult pathways out of their current circumstances,” Mr Koczwara said.

“That this effort is made by students volunteering their own time to contribute to the local community makes this effort on their part all the more valued by Quantum.”

Mr Keyhoe and Ms Dwyer have been busy contacting businesses for donated items to be included in the fundraising auction.
