Drew Orton may not have the competitive grit or will to win that most champion athletes possess, but his laid-back approach to archery works.
The 15-year-old Lowanna College student has enjoyed a phenomenal year on the archery circuit and scooped the medal pool at the recent 3D Archery Alliance of Australia National Championships.
The Tanjil South resident was unstoppable at the championships in Nambucca Heads and took out six titles.
He emerged as Australian champion, equal national record holder, shooter of the year, indoor champion, Victorian title holder and Steven Reeks Medallist for outstanding performance.
Drew’s mother Melainie said her son first picked up a bow about four years ago and took to the sport with ease.
“He doesn’t really train that much, he probably should train more but he’s a natural,” Melainie said.
“He’s doing well, he’s winning most things he’s in.
“He’s not really competitive, he doesn’t care if he wins or not and we like the holiday when we go away.”
Drew is mentored by fellow archer Paul Eagle who also enjoyed success at the AAA National Championships and took out the Victorian state title and a second national indoor title.
Despite his nonchalant approach to the sport, Melainie said Drew’s laconic personality played to his advantage.
