A self-described water spirit, local artist Wendy Twyerould said she often felt paintings were incomplete without the presence of water in the image.
“I’m Ariel, I would be the Little Mermaid if I could. I love being around water. I just love water,” she said.
“I always seem to think a painting is not finished until there is water in there somewhere. It just completes a painting for me … it reflects a bit of my soul.”
Ms Twyerould is artist in residence at the Yarragon Station Gallery this month, with a series aptly titled Water Spirit where she will spend every Sunday of the month painting at the gallery for visitors to see.
“It is daunting having people watch you paint,” she said.
“I’m not one to have people look over my shoulder but mainly they chat. They don’t really sit and watch, but mainly they come in, have a look, have a chat about what they’ve seen and move on and that is great.
“It was really great for people to look at my work and ask where it was painted and I really enjoy doing it.”
Relatively new to painting, Ms Twyerould has been a cake decorator all her life, however, switched to painting about five years ago.
“I taught cake decorating at Korumburra at that stage and there was an artist there doing lessons so I took a term of that and basically he just let me do my own thing and advised along the way,” she said.
“At the moment I am trying to do realism.
“I like to dabble. I mainly do acrylic and oils, however, would like to dabble in watercolours down the track.
“While I’m new I want to get what I’m comfortable with out of the way and maybe concentrate later on to do a different medium.”
Ms Twyerould said she could apply some of the skills she had gained from cake decorating to painting.
“I started off doing flowers because I make sugar flowers,” she said.
“I understand the structure of a flower so I started painting orchids and roses.”
Ms Twyerould will be painting at the Station Gallery in Yarragon every Sunday for a month, beginning this Sunday, June 10.
