Albert Street Primary School set a full day aside to celebrate NAIDOC week as a school with a range of activities centred on Aboriginal culture.
Special needs intervention coordinator Leonarda Friguglietti said the day began with raising the Aborginal flag in the morning followed by a series of activities centred around the theme of “because of her, we can”.
“This means that this year all the focus is on Aboriginal women and how they have been a part of the community all along,” she said.
“The older students are looking up women, like Cathy Freeman, from past and present.
“The younger students are learning about Tiddalick the frog … and the kids are going to be part of a play.
“A parent who is part of the school council will be saying the Dreamtime and the students will be a part of that.”
Activities ranging from rock-painting and mask-making to making an Aborginal flag made from the traced cut-outs of students’ hands available to students who are learning parts of the Gunai Kurnai language as part of their curriculum.
“It is part of the culture and language curriculum,” Ms Friguglietti said.
“There are only two other schools doing the Gunai Kurnai language.
“We will start with the basic language and that will be part of our LOTE into the future.”
