Blue buns raise awareness

Grab yourself a blue bun when you’re in Traralgon this month and help raise awareness and support for prostate cancer.

Bakers Delight will sell the delicious treats to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, with 100 per cent of the proceeds donated to cancer research.

Latrobe Valley Prostate Support Group secretary Allan Cunningham said the quirky idea would help encourage men to get a check-up and raise funds for projects and support services locally.

“Bakers Delight have supported not only prostate cancer doing the blue bun campaign, but this year they supported breast cancer and organised baby pink buns,” Mr Cunningham said.

“We’re encouraging men to get their check-ups. We’re handing out pamphlets to men and women because some of the times women are the ones who encourage the men to do the test.

“One woman told me this morning she’d been trying to get her husband to do a test for the past four years and sometimes it’s the wives who make things happen.”

Money raised is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia with funds allocated to local projects, research and support services.

Bakers Delight franchisee Matt Stephenson said the idea came from the store’s community-minded staff.

“We get to not only sell some buns in the store but we get out into some local schools, such as St Gabriel’s and meet the local families,” Mr Stephenson said.

“The money raised stays locally, we donate 100 per cent of the money raised from the blue buns to the local group.

“We did it last year and we raised about $2700 and we were very pleased with that. This will grow over time as we develop the campaign.”
