The life of Don Coupe was fondly remembered on Saturday, January 18 at the third Don Coupe Memorial swim meet held by Moe Swimming Club at the Moe outdoor pool.
Coupe was a member of Moe Swimming Club and the Gippsland Flippers Masters Swimming was recognised by the special event which was attended by members of the Coupe family, Moe Swimming Club and the Flippers.
These groups combined in an exhibition pairs handicap relay, Coupe’s pet event, and despite the cool weather and even cooler water, 16 people enjoyed a 50m lap to honour the local legend.
The swim meet was well attended with more than 160 young swimmers from all over Gippsland and they enjoyed the spectacle if older swimmers participating in this event for the sheer fun and enjoyment of it.
Couple spent many years teaching in the Latrobe Valley and in later life, he went on to compete at many local and world Masters events.
As recognition of his commitment to swimming, Don was inducted into the Latrobe Valley Sporting Hall of Fame on Australia Day 2019.
At the conclusion of the memorial swim, the Coupe family awarded the Don Coupe Dedication to Swimming Award to someone who reflected the beliefs and ideals that were so important to him throughout his years participating in the sport.
These ideals include; involvement – both in and out of the water, enjoyment – keep fit and be a role model, patience and persistence – commitment to clubs and the concerns they encounter and finally, longevity – long term commitment to swimming and all it involves.
Don’s wife, Margaret, presented the award to Andrew Marks of Warragul Swimming Club, who was chosen for his continued support and involvement in swimming, in fact, Marks braved the chilly water and swam for his club on the day.
