Community bands together for run

FUN, fitness and unity was the order of the day at the Latrobe City Traralgon Harriers Fun Run on Sunday, a theme embodied by Kurnai College over the five kilometre course.

With just a week’s notice, the school put together a team of about 40 runners and walkers to support the community run and the MSE Williams Youth Support fund, all proudly wearing college colours on the day.

One of their number, Nick Schilling, was the overall winner on the day, but the focus for Kurnai was community spirit, according to college principal Anthony Rodaughan.

“There were two big pluses, one is community engagement… and also the fitness benefits of people getting started (with exercise),” he said.

“It’s accessible for everyone; you can walk, bring the dog, it’s something for the kids and then the serious runners can go flat out and do it twice if they want… there’s something for everyone.

“There was a few bits of rivalry between different staff members along the way and a lot of high fives as we ran along, so it was all good fun.”

The college hopes to expand its number of participants to more than 100 next year, a vision overall winner Schilling (17.24 seconds) was in full support of.

“It’s fantastic to see Anthony Rodaughan backing physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, especially in this day and age when people are busy with work taking a back seat to healthy lifestyles,” Schilling said.

“It was fantastic to see so many people out and about and it would be great to see the numbers increase next year and hopefully we can… hit a different target audience.”

The fun run was this year completed by 290 runners and walkers, up from 130 last year, with $1595 raised for the Latrobe City Trust’s MSE Williams Youth Support fund, an organisation which provides financial assistance for the Valley’s young people to fulfil their dreams.
